Hello,
Are there a lot of med surg nurses out there? Med surg is its own specialty in my own opinion and it takes a special nurse to stick with it. I love med surg nursing but want to give circulating nursing a try in the OR and I really want to teach. The facility I work in doesn't have a psych facility so we get a lot of mentally unstable patients and I find it very difficult to deal with these patients sometimes. I think that if med surg nurses have to take care of psychiatric patients then they should give us some training because, honestly, what we learned about psychiatric nursing in nursing school is long gone. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Am I crazy to expect some sort of guidance in my practice? I am really wondering if other hospitals have this same issue? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cindy
Hi Cindy, I see what you are saying. It would be nice if they gave you some sort of inservices on dealing with the psych patients.
ReplyDeleteHey Cindy,
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that it doesn't matter what type of health care setting one is involved in that psychiatric patients will always be encountered. Actually I believe more time should be spent on the psychiatric aspect of nursing, but this is just my personal opinion. I work in a doctors office and believe you me I have seen it all.
Hi Cindy: I agree with you about the need for psychiatric inservicing, d/t the number of patients who suffer from anxiety, stress, depression, or other more sever diagnosed psychiatric problems. I deal with patients who suffer long-term pain issues, and some have addiction and ETOH problems. Add that to the mix and we could benefit from a Psych practitioner on staff. JD
ReplyDeleteCindy,
ReplyDeleteMy only experience with med-surg is when I was floated to that area. My main focus was ICU; therefore, whenever I did float I felt overwhelmed. I have much appreciation for those that work in areas such as this.
